Abhayam - A Home for Poor

Encouraged by the whole hearted support of our well-wishers, and growing demand to respond to the volume of genuine requests coming to us, Uthishta has decided to take up an ambitious housing project from this year onwards, along with other ongoing service activities. We would like to gift a small budget house to a homeless poor family through this project. It is a dream project for Uthishta, and we are taking our first step this year..

Uthishta had been receiving such requests for a while, this year we have a request from Sri. Hari from Kannur, Kerala, who is a poor handicapped homeless father of 3 girl children approaching their marriage ages. Uthishta volunteers had visited the family and ascertained the reality and were really moved to find the pathetic plight of this family and their struggle to live their life.

Hari was working as stone cutter in the nearby quarry, unfortunately physically unwell now and can’t work anymore as per his doctors. His wife works in neighborhood to sustain their family and their children studying in the nearby school. They are somehow managing to live at the mercy of their friends and neighbors. With all their savings, they had in fact started construction of a small shelter in their only land (4 cents), but their financial condition did not allow them to think beyond foundation work.

Their humble dream – live a respectful life, own a house before their daughter’s marriage – is a mirage. Hari's poor stone cutter co-workers, then had agreed to help him with all labor work free or at minimal cost, provided somehow he can manage to get materials. This is when a request has come to Uthishta through one of our volunteers, checking if we can offer any help

With the blessings of well-wishers like you, Uthishta will be completing this project. We have asked couple of well-wishers in his locality to form a committee involving local representatives and Hari's friends to oversee the project, so that this project can be completed in short time and within the budget. The total estimate is of Rs. 500000/- (Five Lakhs), First installment of Rs. 100000/- (One Lakh) has been already handed over to the construction committee and they have started the work (photos attached). Uthishta wishes to see this family in their new home by the Sankranti of 2016 (January 14th), marking a positive change in their life.

Together we can make this possible. Let us start on this.
